With this passage from Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates describes my own secret garden: "Poetry aims for an economy of truth."
My favorite passages --whether from essays or arguments or proofs or novels-- all read like poetry, in this sense. They reveal truth, and they do it precisely, and they do it beautifully.
It's the mark for which I'm always aiming.
